Jerrome and I met to discuss on the project.
I shared with him the details of wednesday's FYP Mid-Point Assessment, such as the concern about:
1. What is the new media element?
2. What is the point we are trying to make (the message)
3. How can we achieve that message?
We brainstormed and thought about moving towards another direction in our FYP.
The results:
We went back to our previously brainstormed ideas and were inspired by comic strips.
Each comic strip panel showcases a scene in the comic. We thought about exploring how different the ending to the comic could be if characters took different choices to advance the story at each panel.
Here's what we came up with:
We thought of combining flash with video in our idea.
Title: The Office
Project Type: Video
What's so new media about it?: Inspired by the combination of hypertext fiction and comic strips. The video is about the happenings in an office. But at the conclusion of every scene in the video, the viewer chooses between two or three paths to advance the story. How much of the story the viewer decides to explore will affect the conclusion of the story. For example, if the viewer decides to end the story after going through 60% of the story, the main characters will end up with a bad ending. If the viewer goes through at least 80% of the story available, the characters will experience the normal ending. If the viewer painstakenly scours the office to reveal the whole plot, the characters will experience the "perfect", or best possible ending available to them.
Technical details: The scenes will be shot on video and edited into segments as in normal video-making. However, flash will be used to allow the viewer to make certain decisions based on what happens in the video. For example, in the point of view of a character who is on his way to his own office, but hears some noise from a supposedly empty office room, he can choose to investigate or ignore the noise. What he does affects how the story progresses.
Of course, to make it realistic to be completed by two of us, the entire story would take no longer than 10mins to complete. However, we estimate that the longest possible route available would take less than 20mins to complete.
